“Bobblehead Jesus” Worship: Symbolism Over Substance

jesusbobbleheadMuch of America’s modern, mainstream, so called “Christianity” could be thrown into the ocean and sunk to the bottom of the sea and the world would be better off. Don’t get mad at me just yet. Here me out. There seems to be this cancerous “footloose-and-fancy-free” and “if-it-feels-good-do-it-in-the-name-of-Jesus” gospel that is predominant across the land. There are so many souls being sucked into this sewer of “bad Christianity”.

Why? Because it’s a hollow, superficial and cheap imitation “Christianity” that requires no repentance from sin, no obedience to the faith, no lifestyle of holiness, no discipline or temperance and no Holy Spirit led living. The Bible states that this type of “Christianity” would be prevalent in the last days- “Having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof”. 2 Timothy 3:5 -Or you could easily say it this way- “Having a symbolism but lacking the substance thereof”.

I see and hear so much now being done “in the name of Christ” that makes me sick with burden. So called “Christians” living sin infested lives, all the while glorying in their supposed “grace” and “liberty in Christ”.

Hey, we’re all just a bunch of sinners saved by grace, right? Wrong! Quit listening to watered-down ear ticklers of this age and read your Bible, oh precious soul!
A Christian is not a practicing sinner… we’re practicing Christ followers. Yes, we’ve been saved by grace and according to Titus, this grace “teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts”. But the scriptures truly bear out that after our conversion, we are no longer to be referred to as sinners…. but as saints, that is, called out ones, holy ones! We’ve been delivered and redeemed from our sins, remember? Or was that just symbolic?

This bad Christianity going around prefers symbolism over substance. So many “Christians” prefer a symbolic salvation that puts their name on Heaven’s roll but their natures are still unregenerated and bound by sin. Whatever happened to the literal transforming power of the Cross that turns a deadbeat into a hard worker, a thief into an honest man, a drunk or drug addict into a sober, responsible person? Whatever happened to “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation, old things have past away, behold all things become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Symbolism over substance, lip service over life service, name tag over nature change, taco shell over hamburger meat… however you look at it, it all comes down to a bad Christianity. It is void of true sincerity and godly living. The sweet fragrance of a holy life devoted to a living Christ is replaced by the the stench of dead formalism and hypocritical churchgoing. Hypocrisy itself can be defined as symbolism over substance.

The real substance of the gospel is explained away by liberal theologians and false teachers who will stand in judgement for their “smooth sayings” and damnable heresies. They may not blatantly deny but they subtly imply any real or substantial power in the Cross. But folks, did you know tht Christ’s sacrifice on the cross was actually and literally to destroy the works of sin in your life? Read the whole chapter of 1 John chapter 3. “His name shall be called Jesus for He will save his people FROM their sins”– not IN their sins! Matthew 1:21 Do you really think that God would send His son Jesus to die such a painful death for just symbolism?

Many people want to be forgiven of their sin but not truly delivered from their sin! By the evidence of modern “Christianity” I believe this is true. Many people make shallow prayers to God asking for forgiveness but as far as a real commitment to forsake their sin forever…well, hey… nobody’s perfect!

Deep in the heart, many want relief from the burden of a guilty conscience but not released from the strongholds of sin itself. In essence, they are telling God, “Jesus, I want my guilty conscience numbed but I want to continue practicing sin”. Be careful, you might just get what you pray for and end up with a “seared conscience” practicing sin with no feelings of regret or remorse. I have seen this happen with some so called “Christians”who were totally backslidden and didn’t even know it because of this deception. I would like to brand this thought in you with this illustration- What if a certain man was to find out he had a painful cancer that the doctor said must be excised or he would die… But instead the man asked the doctor to just numb the area where the pain was and leave the cancer there… to spread. You would surely call this man foolish.

I submit to you that much in the same way there are people who think that this is what “salvation” means. They want to be forgiven so they won’t feel condemned or ashamed but they also want to keep petting their pet sins. but no sin is a pet for long- it will turn on you in the end. These are foolish religious people who are numbing their consciences with cheap confessions of “God, I’m sorry” thinking that God is forgiving them without sincere repentance or forsaking of the sin.
However, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Galatians 6:7

John the baptist said it well, “Bring forth fruit that shows that you have truly repented”. Matthew 3:8 “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, ‘These people draw near to me with their mouths and honor me with their lips (symbolism) but their hearts (substance) are far from me” Matthew 15:8 But God says, “He who covers his sins (symbolism) will not prosper but whoever confesses and forsakes his sin (substance) will have mercy.”. Proverbs 28:3

I believe this modern Christianity or “gospel” will prove to damn more souls to Hell than any other deception on the face of the earth. What a hellish but brilliant idea those devils have come up with- an artificial repentance, an artificial salvation, an artificial faith and an artificial security! Symbolism all the way to Hell!

Folks, when it is all said and done, and you stand before the Almighty, Holy Holy, Holy God, it’s not what your preacher said that you will be judged by, or even by a dose of bad Christianity that you conformed to, or by the most popular symbolism of the day. It won’t be by how many times you said, “I’m sorry”. You are going to be judged by the substance of your life. By your actions, attitudes, desires, motives, thoughts and… yes, by your WORKS! “But my preacher says….”. What does the Bible say? Are you going to put your faith in God’s Word or in men who can and often are be mistaken?

“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.” Revelation 20:12-13
If that’s not enough, how about this one- “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” 2 Corinthians 5:10
Or how about this one- “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.” 1Corinthians 6:9-10 Do these scriptures honestly speak of symbolism to you?

You may say, “This guy doesn’t have a good understanding of God’s grace”. You may even call me a “legalist.” However, I know God’s grace is an awesome substance. It isn’t a symbolic blindfold around God’s eyes “so as not to see His children sinning” as some men falsely teach. God’s grace is substance for our lives that empowers us to live holy and pure. “The grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, that we should live soberly, righteously and godly in this present age.” Titus 2:11-12

Am I saying that a Christian can never fall into sin? No! But I am saying that a Christian can choose to overcome sin. God’s mercy is available if we should stumble. But stumbling shouldn’t be our normal way of life. If we are stumbling around in sin constantly then it is a good indication that we are still unrepentant, unconverted, in love with this world. We need to have a deeper work of true repentance performed in our hearts. 1 Corinthians 10:13 states that God will faithfully provide “a way of escape” from every temptation that confronts us.

What if we started believing God’s Word and truly chose every time this “way of escape”? What victorious living we would have! What joy and peace would fill our souls! “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in it’s lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have any dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” Romans 6:14 Praise God for such a liberating message of substance! Practical and substantive meat that we should not only chew on but heartily gulp down!

Some people actually see this type of message on living holy and free from sin as an “evil legalistic doctrine” or at best unattainable. I have to wonder if these people have been so conditioned by liberal theology that the truth has become a stumbling block to them. -That they would actually see living victoriously above sin as erroneous and “an evil teaching”. I guess they assume it brings people into bondage and “legalism”. When in truth it frees the soul to worship God in holiness without guilt, without a defiled conscience. Folks, when you have confessed and forsaken sin in your life and God has forgiven you- Oh what a feeling! To be clean and pure before the Lord! -Oh what a power! To be anointed and filled with His Holy Spirit and used by the Lord!

We need to get back to real Biblical Christianity. We need to get back to holiness, obedience, discipleship and a real and vital relationship with Jesus. We need to get back to the basics. We need to get back to substance.
We mind’s well worship and serve a plastic, bobblehead Jesus on our living room window sill or car dashboard as it is about as true devotion to Christ as what is promoted in this bad Christianity today. Remember, one of God’s ten commandments was not to worship any graven image of God.

Why? Because God does not want us replacing or substituting symbolism for the true substance. Idols are symbolism. God wants no object or concept taking what is His rightful place! He wants a personal and intimate relationship with us. He want’s to be our Father and we, His children. Bad Christianity is when our churchianity itself replaces the living Christ! Even church, ministry and christian fellowship should not take the place of your relationship with God.

Perhaps you have seen that you have been a symbolic “Christian”, sucked into believing in this artificial or superficial Christianity. Perhaps your tired of playing the hypocrite and you want a true walk with God. Did you know you can have the real thing? Did you know that you can fill your symbolism with substance? Hallelujah!
But it’s going to cost you. You must grieve over and forsake your

sins of hypocrisy and symbolism and commit yourself to the total Lordship of Jesus Christ. You need to devote yourself to the substance of God’s Word and prayer. You need to commit to cultivate a relationship with the Risen Savior. You need to walk in purity and truth, my friend. When you are totally sincere with God, then you will be sincerely saved and transformed by the power of the Cross. Hallelujah! You will have a real purpose for living and a divine destiny with your Creator. You will receive a “peace that passes all understanding”, a “joy unspeakable and full of glory”, a “fear of God that is clean” and so much more, my beloved friend!

So don’t settle for symbolism over substance, form over power, hypocrisy over sincerity, “bobblehead Jesus” worship over a true intimate friendship with the Lord Jesus. Instead, become part of the remnant of true believers in Christ! The few, the humble, the literally redeemed!

Those who are truly called by God to confront a worldly, backslidden church and the evils of this age are usually not pastors of megachurches. Usually they are lonely prophets and watchmen who stand against the myriad of false prophets who preach nice candy coated, fluffy white sermons that appeal to the masses but really do little to bring men to true repentance and faith in God.
