“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Jeremiah 17:9

Have you ever truly acknowledged or have been even remotely aware that your heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked?
Worldly wisdom and motivational speakers everywhere say things like “Follow your heart”, “be true to thy self” and other nice and cute phrases that seem to inspire us to trust in our own hearts. But should we really trust in what God says is “deceitful above all else and desperately wicked”?

Until we get a true revelation of who we are as “sinners” or “wicked souls”, we will do what most of the human race does, we will deceive ourselves, justify our evil hearts and veneer the selfish, sinful, worm infested rottenness of our core being as good, decent and even “righteous”. Why? Because the human heart within us can mask our true evil intentions, our self centered motives, our ability to manipulate others to get what we want from them, be it, money, respect, power, even their love.

Most of the time, we manipulate our own hearts and live under enough benevolent and “good virtues” that it is enough to whitewash our true inward condition. Basically we deceive ourselves in this way- because there is “some good” in what we “do” and how we “feel” or “think” in our overall lives, it is very easy for us to marginalize or discount completely the great amount of selfishness, the lust of our flesh, the pride of our intellect, the duplicity of our motives.

Like peering into a crystal clear bottle of spring water thinking it is refreshing and invigoratingly healthy for us, unknown to us that it has been laced with odorless, transparent and toxic chemicals that will eventually kill us. Our own “goodness” is a stinking dung heap and our self righteousness as “filthy rags”.

We drink our own kool-aid of the mixture, the duplicity of our experiential knowledge of both “good” and “evil”. Like Adam and Eve, we cover our nakedness, our shameful wickedness to create a buffer between a conscience smitten by guilt and conviction, to try to appear “unfallen” and “virtuous”. But the truth is, our hearts are so corrupt and manipulative that we successfully manipulate our own marred image of who we really are and what lies just beneath the superficial exterior of our “goodness and virtue”. Who can know the wickedness of our own heart? Only God knows and only by His Holy Spirit can we be exposed and awakened to our personal utter depravity.
Only a great soul searching moment where we peer deeply and directly at our sinful, selfish heart, can begin to unravel our bondage and slavery to the deception of a wicked heart.

As a matter of fact, the church is filled with very “religious” and “self righteous” folks who constantly condemn sin and evil in others but never once peer into their own wicked souls. These are known as hypocrites and the “self righteous”. However, don’t get me wrong, Jesus never said we didn’t have the right to judge or condemn sinfulness, what He said was “first go and take the plank out of your own eye and then you will be able to see clearly to remove the speck in your brother’s eye.” As true converts and Christians, we must first realize the utter wickedness of our own hearts, we must then repent and “take out the plank in our own lives” that is, live a life of holiness and purity before God, then we will be able to gently and lovingly remove the speck in our brother’s eye. We will be able to make “righteous judgments” not according to our flesh but according to God’s Spirit.

However, if we condemn sin in others while condoning it in our own hearts then we are “whitewashed tombs full of dead men’s bones”. We are hypocrites and our religion is worthless… even worse than worthless, it is actually a hindrance and a stumbling block to others who will never come to Christ or be set free from sin because of our double standard. Our duplicity of soul puts the sacrifice of Christ on the cross to an “open shame”. We may confess to “know Christ” but we “deny Him in our works”. “Nevertheless the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knows them that are his. And, LET EVERY ONE THAT NAMES THE NAME OF CHRIST DEPART FROM INIQUITY.” 2 Timothy 2:19

As hypocrites, who do not see our utter depravity, or repent and live holy lives, we actually help send souls to hell. We make converts who are just like us and “even more a child of hell than ourselves” as Jesus warned.
Knowing our true “desperately wicked hearts”, does not make us then justify who we are and go on living in our depravity in some sort of cheap “grace” religious experience. A true revelation of our sin and selfishness will cause us to have as the scriptures say, “Godly sorrow” which then leads to “Godly repentance” which then leads to true salvation (salvation FROM our sin). 2 Corinthians 7:10

As true believers, the scriptures clearly teach that we are “set free from our sin”, that we are no longer “slaves to sin”, that we are called to holiness and purity, to being slaves of righteousness”.
“Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. But you know that he appeared so that he might TAKE AWAY our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him KEEPS ON SINNING. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

Dear children, DO NOT LET ANYONE DECEIVE YOU. (even your own heart) The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil which is sin. NO ONE WHO IS BORN OF GOD CONTINUES TO MAKE A PRACTICE OF SINNING, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.” 1 John 3:4-10

Living a holy, sanctified life in Christ only happens when we as believers have a “deep probing” from the Holy Spirit who exposes our wicked hearts and shows us our utter selfishness and sin. This is how a sinner comes to a place of remorse and repentance. Any “salvation” experience less than that is highly questionable.

So in closing, my dear friends and family, has God’s Spirit hovered over the depth of your soul to reveal to you your desperately wicked heart? Has that great revelation, that divine exposure of God’s holiness caused your soul to be in anguish and sorrow over your sinfulness? Has the awakening of who you really are, moved you to tears, Godly sorrow and shame and true repentance?
True repentance is not “feeling sorry” but actually “being sorry” in so much that you want to change, you want to be transformed and be made new. A true believer who is “born again” will go through this “moment of truth”, this moment when the fire of God’s holiness consumes you and reveals your “undoneness”, your “nakedness”.

If all you’ve done is “raised your hand’ in church “with no one looking around” or filled out a church membership card, or made a superficial confession of faith then I am afraid you have not been truly come to true repentance and salvation… and this is vital… for you don’t want to stand before God on judgment day and be exposed as a fraud, as a hypocrite and a false convert. It’s better to be exposed now and forsake your deceptions of thinking you are a “pretty good Christian” in your self righteousness and hypocrisy. It’s better to let God expose your wicked heart to you. Please, don’t be one of those who Jesus turns away because you were truly not one of His.
“Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles? And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'” Matthew 7:22-23

Oh dear friends and family, pray this prayer as King David prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalms 139:23-24
This is Bro Heath and I speak the truth to you in love. I will have to give an account for your soul. And besides, I want you to enjoy the riches of this beautiful faith and hope we have in Jesus. God is so good and He is so beautiful!
