  • Sat, 21 Oct 2017 07:00:00 +0000: Open Our Ears to the Spirit's Promise - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

[In his revelation to John, Jesus said,]  "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it."

    Revelation 2:17 NIV

    Key Thought

The Spirit speaks to Jesus' churches and to Jesus' kingdom people. The Spirit reminds us that no matter how difficult our challenges may be, we will be sustained, shown as innocent, proven victorious, and given a new name. In a world of disease, destruction, decay, and death, the Holy Spirit assures us of everlasting life and eternal victory and new beginnings. This assurance is especially important when we face trials, temptations, and persecutions. And living in a broken world, we know these difficulties will come to all of us at one time or another. So isn't it powerful that the Spirit promises us a better future and lives in us to guarantee that better future?!

    Today's Prayer

Almighty God, my Abba Father, thank you for your promises! Thank you for the Living Promise, the Holy Spirit, who dwells within me. I want to hear the Spirit's voice of hope and respond with faithfulness as I await the unfolding glory that is guaranteed by the Spirit's presence. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

  • Fri, 20 Oct 2017 07:00:00 +0000: A Foretaste of Future Glory! - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us.

    Romans 8:22-23 NLT

    Key Thought

As beautiful and diverse as our world is, something inside us knows that there is something broken about it. Disease, disasters, decay, and death haunt us, even mock us. Our bodies remind us. Disasters make us aware of this reality. Every fund drive to fight some horrible disease awakens us to this truth. But the Holy Spirit's work within us and for us and the promise of the Spirit's presence within us guarantee us that something perfect, not fractured and not vulnerable to decay, is coming. We long for it. We wait in eager hope for it. God has promised it. And we will celebrate it in the Father's presence with new bodies, fully released from sin and suffering. The Spirit is not just our guarantee of that but is also our taste of our future glory.

    Today's Prayer

O Father, thank you for all that you have made. Yet I know, dear Father, that something is broken in my world and that this brokenness invades my daily life. So I thank you for the Holy Spirit who is my assurance of release from what is broken and release to something that is truly more glorious than I can imagine. In Jesus' name, I thank and praise you. Amen.

  • Thu, 19 Oct 2017 07:00:00 +0000: Spirit-life in Mortal Bodies! - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

    Romans 8:10-11 NIV

    Key Thought

Our physical bodies are mortal, finite, and temporary. We don't like to think about this fact or admit it to ourselves, but after a certain point in life, our bodies begin to regularly remind us of this reality. The first few chapters of our Bibles tell us that sin brought spiritual and physical death into the world. But when we became Christians, we were reborn by the work of the Holy Spirit. We were made holy and the Spirit came to live inside of us. So while our bodies are subject to decay, they are also part of a greater reality. They are the place of God's life-giving work through the Spirit, work which will culminate in the same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead also raising us up and giving us immortal bodies that are beyond decay. While our bodies remind us of our mortality, the Holy Spirit is our reminder, our guarantee, of life forever with God.

    Today's Prayer

Father God, thank you for life that cannot be touched by death, disease, or decay. Thank you for the Holy Spirit who makes this spiritual life possible, both now and for my unending future in your glorious and joyous presence. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.

  • Wed, 18 Oct 2017 07:00:00 +0000: Hear What the Spirit Says! - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

[In his revelation to John, Jesus said,]  "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death."

    Revelation 2:11 NIV

    Key Thought

I remember the old Wolf Brand Chili® commercials where we would see a steaming bowl of chili and a voice off camera would say, "Neighbor, how long has it been since you had a big, thick, steaming bowl of Wolf Brand Chili®? Well, that's too long!"™ Let's apply that question differently: When was the last time you were part of a church that called all its members to fast, pray, and open Scripture and then ask God to help the church hear the message the Spirit has for them? "Well, that's too long!" Jesus challenges those who hear his message to listen intently — not just with their ears, but also with their hearts. Let's be God's people who hunger to hear what the Spirit is seeking to say to us through Scripture!

    Today's Prayer

Father, forgive us — forgive me! We sometimes have not sought to hear your voice and your word and the message the Spirit has for us in that word. O God, give us a yearning to hear the message the Spirit has for our congregation at this time, with our challenges and opportunities. I ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  • Tue, 17 Oct 2017 07:00:00 +0000: Jesus Is Lord - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

    1 Corinthians 12:3 NLT

    Key Thought

As we think of God as Father, Son, and Spirit, our minds quickly become overwhelmed. God is greater than our greatest thought and is more complex than our most insightful moment can help us comprehend. But there is a truth that I believe we can all understand. The Spirit will never lead us to say anything untruthful or unholy about God — as Father, Son, or Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God convicts us of the truth, gives us insight into truth, and empowers us to declare the truth. To be able to confess Christ as Lord with a heart full of faith is a declaration of our commitment and is also testimony to God's grace. The Holy Spirit unlocks our minds and empowers our hearts to confess Jesus as Lord!

    Today's Prayer

Father in heaven, because of your grace and the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus, I confidently confess that Jesus is Lord. Jesus is Lord of all things, seen and unseen, and I want him to be Lord of my heart as I seek to live the lifestyle of your kingdom. I know my ability to submit to you and truly live as your disciple comes as a gift through your grace and the leading of the blessed Holy Spirit. I offer you — Father, Son, and Spirit — my thanks! Amen.

  • Mon, 16 Oct 2017 07:00:00 +0000: Useful Because of the Spirit - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

Every part of Scripture is God-breathed [Spirit-inspired]  and useful one way or another — showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God's way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.

    2 Timothy 3:16-17 MESSAGE

    Key Thought

As you open your Bible, imagine the Holy Spirit standing in front of soft clay or un-chiseled marble. As you read the Scriptures, the Spirit takes those Scriptures and molds you and shapes you into someone beautiful. That someone is still you — just as surely as clay shaped by a potter is still clay and chiseled marble is still marble — but as the Spirit works on you through the Word, you come to resemble Jesus, more and more. You are shaped by the Holy Spirit who uses that Scripture to mold you for the life God has for you!

    Today's Prayer

O Father, use your Word to make me useful as the Spirit molds and shapes me into the person you want me to be. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

  • Sun, 15 Oct 2017 07:00:00 +0000: What the Spirit Says to the Churches - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

[In his revelation to John, Jesus said,]  "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God."

    Revelation 2:7 NIV

    Key Thought

Jesus uses the Holy Spirit to speak to his people, his churches, in the second and third chapters of the book of Revelation. But don't you believe that if we seek God and are striving to worship God empowered by the Spirit, then the Spirit will also speak to us in fresh and powerful ways through God's word? When we open the Bible, more happens than mere reading! The Spirit who inspired that word also convicts us and calls out to us and corrects us and seeks to conform us to the will of God and the character of Jesus. So let's open our Bibles with the expectation that the Spirit will use these old words in fresh and new ways and give us new insights for all our battles, both old and new.

    Today's Prayer

O God, help me hear your word in the various ways you want me to hear it. Shape and make me like Jesus, your Living Word, and Ultimate Word, as the Spirit works on my heart. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
