  • Wed, 21 Feb 2018 08:00:00 +0000: Standing Firm in One Spirit - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel ...

    Philippians 1:27 NIV

    Key Thought

At first glance, we are not sure whether the word "Spirit" in this passage should be capitalized. Further contemplation, however, reveals to me that having it capitalized is correct. As we've read these past few days, the love we share for each other and the unity that we have in Christ are inspired and empowered by the Holy Spirit. We stand together, we are part of the same family, because of the bond we share together in the Holy Spirit. Our strength to strive for common goals and to make every effort to be one comes from the unifying power and presence of the Holy Spirit. The love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control we have in our lives come because of the presence of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). So now, let's seek to let the Spirit's influence mold us and shape us so we can work together for the sake of the good news of Jesus.

    Today's Prayer

Almighty God, whatever happens in my life, I want to honor you, share Jesus, and display the fruit of the Spirit. I want to bless your people and stand together in unity with them, working for the cause of the gospel. So I ask for your help to honor this commitment, to keep it foremost in my heart, and not to be distracted or deterred by disappointment, hardship, heartache, or my own fleshly desires. I ask for this grace in the name and by the power of Jesus Christ. Amen.

  • Tue, 20 Feb 2018 08:00:00 +0000: One! - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all.

    Ephesians 4:4-6 NLT

    Key Thought

Unity is more than just getting along. At the core of maintaining unity and keeping the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3), there is ONE core reality. Paul emphasizes this core reality by using "one" seven times. These seven immutable and essential elements of our faith include the "one Spirit" — the Holy Spirit of God who is at work in us. We must never let the Spirit of God become relegated to a place of diminished importance. We must, however, realize that just as the "one Lord" animates and defines the "one hope," the "one faith," and the "one baptism," so also the "one Spirit" empowers and defines the nature of our being the "one body" as we seek to honor the "one God."

    Today's Prayer

Yahweh, you are the one God. I commit to love you with all of my heart, my soul, my mind, and my strength. I praise you for revealing yourself as Father, Son, and Spirit. I thank you for the Lord Jesus, the Son, the basis of my Christian faith, the source of my hope, and the focus of my baptism. I thank you for being present in me as the Spirit, my connection to your body, the church, and to you. May what I think and how I live bring honor to you as the one God. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

  • Mon, 19 Feb 2018 08:00:00 +0000: One Spirit to Drink - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

    1 Corinthians 12:13 NLT

    Key Thought

Rather than offering my insight on this passage, the amplified paraphrasing of this passage in Eugene Peterson's The Message is quite to the point: "By means of [Jesus'] one Spirit, we all said good-bye to our partial and piecemeal lives. We each used to independently call our own shots, but then we entered into a large and integrated life in which Jesus has the final say in everything. (This is what we proclaimed in word and action when we were baptized.) Each of us is now a part of his resurrection body, refreshed and sustained at one fountain — his Spirit — where we all come to drink. The old labels we once used to identify ourselves — labels like Jew or Greek, slave or free — are no longer useful. We need something larger, more comprehensive."

    Today's Prayer

Father, thank you for one place that all the barriers that divide us as human beings are supposed to fall away. Be with us, your people, and me in particular as your child, as we try to live out your plan for us, and may we by the power of the Holy Spirit see all distinctions that divide us fall away. May the Spirit within us mean more to us than our race, culture, nationality, politics, economic status, and family distinctions that so often divide us. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

  • Sun, 18 Feb 2018 08:00:00 +0000: United in the Spirit - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

    Ephesians 4:3 NLT

    Key Thought

When we open the book of Acts, we hear Jesus promise twice in the first few verses to send the Holy Spirit to empower the early disciples as they go to all nations to share the good news of Jesus. As we read further, we see the Holy Spirit at work to break down every barrier — geographical, cultural, racial, economic, political, and social — to make the people who come to Jesus into one new people. Paul reflects on the great grace of God in Ephesians chapters 1-3. In today's verse, he challenges Jesus' followers to make every effort to keep what the Holy Spirit and the grace of God had worked to create: a people united by the Holy Spirit and held together with the bond of peace. He wanted them to "wage peace"! He wanted them to be peacemakers and not just "peacewanters." Making peace can happen only when we allow the Spirit to control our hearts while we earnestly and diligently strive to be united through the Spirit as God's children.

    Today's Prayer

Father, please forgive me. I've been selfish, impatient, and harsh to some of your children. I sometimes haven't been committed to "waging peace" with the same passion as I have sought to get my own way and protect my own position. Please help me as I try to mend relationships and re-establish fellowship with those that I've alienated. Please help me as I seek to have your Spirit take control of my heart and as I seek to live in peace with your children. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

  • Sat, 17 Feb 2018 08:00:00 +0000: The Spirit's Work of Love - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

[Epaphras is] the one who told us how thoroughly love had been worked into your lives by the Spirit.

    Colossians 1:8 MESSAGE

    Key Thought

Epaphras had told Paul about the Colossians' growth in Jesus. One vital element of this growth was their love for each other. Paul recognized that the power of the Holy Spirit is what had inspired, empowered, and worked this love into the fabric of their daily lives. The Spirit empowers God's character to be formed in us (Romans 5:1-5). We sometimes call this character the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) as the Spirit works to form Christ in us (2 Corinthians 3:18). Therefore, let's daily invite the Spirit into our lives to do his transformational work so that the influence of God's Holy Presence shows up in the way we feel about each other and treat each other.

    Today's Prayer

Father in heaven, I yield my heart to be molded by the work of your Holy Presence, the Spirit. I want to be conformed to the character and compassion of Jesus. However, I know for this transformation to happen fully, I desperately need the holy fire of your Spirit to empower my changes into a full likeness of Christ. Burn away what is false and selfish. Fuel in me a holy desire to be conformed to your holy character and gracious compassion. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

  • Fri, 16 Feb 2018 08:00:00 +0000: Intimate Friendship - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

The amazing grace of the Master, Jesus Christ, the extravagant love of God, the intimate friendship of the Holy Spirit, be with all of you.

    2 Corinthians 13:14 MESSAGE

    Key Thought

While most translations of this verse say "fellowship of the Holy Spirit," I find the phrase "the intimate friendship of the Holy Spirit" to be powerful and exciting. We are brought into close fellowship with God and each other through "the intimate friendship of the Holy Spirit." Think about the implications of this concept. Our fellowship with one another and our connections to each other are based on our being drawn together through our shared friendship of the Spirit. As we are drawn into the intimate friendship of the Spirit of God, we find ourselves drawn nearer and closer to each other.

    Today's Prayer

Almighty God, I want to be drawn near to you. I thank you for the extravagant grace of my being able even to say such a thing. You are holy and majestic, yet you want me to come close to you. Thank you for inviting me into such an intimate friendship through the Holy Spirit as I commit to being in a close relationship with other believers who yearn to be drawn near to you. In Jesus' name, I thank you for this grace. Amen.

  • Thu, 15 Feb 2018 08:00:00 +0000: Deep-Spirited Friends - God's Holy Fire from Heartlight

If you've gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care — then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends.

    Philippians 2:1-2 MESSAGE

    Key Thought

We have so many blessings being in Jesus. One of those blessings is the fellowship we have based on the Holy Spirit. Paul calls this blessing, "being in a community of the Spirit." Our relationship in the Spirit must affect the way we treat each other! As "deep-spirited friends" who are brothers and sisters through the Spirit's work in us, let's agree to treat each other with loving respect and support. This commitment will be empowered by the Holy Spirit and becomes especially essential when relationships are strained and tough. Being filled with the Spirit is more than just having a special power for difficult times and great opportunities; it also means always treating those in Christ — and, indeed, everyone else also — in ways that honor Christ!

    Today's Prayer

O Father, forgive me for the times my selfishness, ego, or prejudice have kept me from displaying the character of the Holy Spirit toward my brothers and sisters in Christ and toward others with whom I interact. I ask that, by the power of your Spirit, you form me into the person you want me to be. May the fruit of the Spirit be present in my life, I pray, in Jesus' name. Amen.
